We went to see Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy last night with Steve and his MENSA moving group.
I never read the books … and when I watched it on PBS, I gave up quickly because the production values were so low (really bad props & special effects and pretty marginal acting, IMHO).
The movie certainly had far better production values … and was pretty funny, but seemed kind of disjointed to me. From what I could tell, they took a bunch of sections of all the book and stuck them together in a bit of a hodge-podge. There were also a lot of important elements that they used but never explained (Towels, in particular … and the “Peril Sensitive Sunglasses” that Ford & Zaphod wore).
I did laugh a lot … but only at the individual gags … the movie lacked a cohesiveness that I would have liked.

Automakers on Wednesday praised President George W. Bush’s call for incentives to boost sales of energy-efficient vehicles, saying the tax credits would help drive more of the technology into the marketplace.

Ok, this probably the FIRST thing he’s done that I agree with.
It feels wrong, and I suspect there’s going to be some twist, but I’ll endorse the idea for now.

Grey Gibbs drives the Grey Ghost

Ok, he’s not THAT grey … just a bit ’round the temples.
Ginny and I went down to my folks house for dinner last weekend.
Of course the first thing he wanted to do when we arrived is take the new Escape Hybrid for a spin around the block.
I think he was impressed … although he admitted to being a bit disconcerted when he put the car in gear without the engine running, and pressed on the accelerator … and it moved. He did like the smooth transition from electric to gas engines.
Although I don’t need my father’s approval … it’s nice to have.
Back into space

NASA has put together a rather impressive flash presentation on the Space Shuttle’s return to flight.
They even have Scott Bakula, on the bridge of the Enterprise, doing intros.
Pretty darn cool.

Dammit … why did they cancel Star Trek: Enterprise?
This last season is the best one they’ve had yet.
I just watched In a Mirror, Darkly – Part 1 and loved it.
Even the opening sequence was reworked … and it a really good way (I was swearing at the Tivo, however, because it was glitching at that point … need to open it up and check the hard drive).
Scott Bakula did a fine job as a hard-ass Archer.
This last season has done a good job of establishing some of the canon from the original series and the movies.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they have some veteran Trek authors writing the stories … I’ve always enjoyed Judith Reeves-Stevens & Garfield Reeves-Stevens books.

[A] bill, introduced last week by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., would prohibit federal meteorologists from competing with companies such as AccuWeather and The Weather Channel, which offer their own forecasts through paid services and free ad-supported Web sites.

I guess it was just a matter of time before the weather got political.
